Preparing Against Satan:
Spiritual Battles and Preparation
You have probably heard the saying, "The Devil made me do it." But here is the truth: Satan can attack you, but he cannot win. With the Lord’s permission, he can tempt or influence you, or cause difficult times and suffering, but his power is very limited. Satan cannot make you do anything.
Time and time again, when we experience anger, grumbling, or misery, the issue isn't "out there"—it is in here, in our own hearts. When we are not focused on God, we leave ourselves vulnerable to temptation.
In Matthew 4:1-2, Jesus shows us exactly how to prepare for and overcome the spiritual battles we face every single day.
Matthew's Background: The King and the Tempter
So far in the book of Matthew, we have seen Jesus established as King through His genealogy, His birth, the testimony of His enemies, and John the Baptist's herald. But if Jesus is to be the King of Kings, He must demonstrate the power to defeat Satan.
Jesus is baptized, receives the Holy Spirit, and is immediately led into the wilderness. This dry, barren, and desolate region—properly known as Jeshimon (desolation)—sets the stage for the ultimate confrontation between Jesus and the powers of darkness.
Follow the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit sent Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted. This might seem surprising if we view the Holy Spirit only as a tool for our own comfort and self-directed plans.
But the Spirit does not exist to bless our self-directed plans. His ultimate priority is shaping you into the person God created you to be.
Walking by the Spirit means surrendering control of your life, even when it leads into uncomfortable, challenging, or inconvenient places. Jesus endured the wilderness to defeat the tempter, retrace Israel’s footsteps in victory, and set an example for us to follow when we find ourselves in a spiritual wasteland.
Pray and Fast
Spiritual battles require spiritual preparation. Satan's primary weapon is deception. He is the ruler of this world who uses lies to trick people into believing that self-reliance and worldly comfort will bring happiness.
To overcome this, Jesus practiced two vital disciplines before facing temptation:
Prayer: Prayer is communicating with God and expressing complete dependence on Him. When you pray, you acknowledge that you cannot overcome temptation in your own strength. It moves your focus from self-reliance to resting in God's control.
Fasting: Fasting is the voluntary denial of a physical need (such as food) to shift your focus to spiritual reliance. It reminds you that God is more necessary than daily provisions and more sustaining than your earthly desires.
Spiritual Principle: Victory is decided before the temptation ever arrives. If you wait until you are in the middle of a trial to prepare, you are already too late.
Main Point: Preparation Leads to Victory.
The battles you face are real, but the victory is possible if you prepare spiritually today.
Confidence: The Holy Spirit has the power to change you from the inside out.
Priorities: Stop chasing the world's approval and start living for God’s calling.
Character: Daily reliance through prayer and fasting produces lasting spiritual fruit.
Challenge
Begin your day in prayer. Even if it is a quick prayer before your feet hit the floor, make sure you begin to prepare yourself in prayer before you face the temptations of the day.
